The event starts in the Cathedral with the solemn exposure of the Martyrs' urn on July 31. In the following 13 days each Vicaria organizes a feast. The 13 August is dedicated to the civil commemorations of the slaughter of Otranto with a procession to the Monument and a commemorative speech. On August 14 in the morning the solemn celebration is held in the Cathedral and in the afternoon a procession is scheduled. Stalls, music and typical products entertain inhabitants and tourists till the firework display at midnight.

The cathedral rises on the top of the town and was built to be the most outstanding church in Apulia. It was built between 1080 and 1088. The cathedral is a synthesis of different styles perfectly blended, the early Christian, the Byzantine and the Romanesque. One of its most beatiful features is the mosaic floor produced by the monk Pantaleone.
