Bear joust

The "bear joust" (25 July) is ancient competition that celebrates the feast of Saint Jacopo and takes its name from the city's heraldic animal. The city is once again pervaded by the medieval atmosphere. The event features parade in costume, medieval music and the four city districts compete in a horseback tournament for the palio, a decorated and painted fabric banner. The days before the palio other events and Trial races are scheduled.
